About the festival
The Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival is a representative historical and cultural festival of Seoul, held in Gwanak, a city rich in history, to honor the patriotic spirit and achievements of General Gang Gam-chan, the hero of the Battle of Gwiju. The festival celebrates the patriotic spirit of the renowned Goryeo general Gang Gam-chan and is a representative festival of Gwanak, created and enjoyed by the residents of Gwanak-gu. The Gang Gam-chan Festival was newly launched in 2016 by integrating the Gwanak-san Azalea Festival, a traditional cultural festival of Gwanak-gu since 1998, and the Nakseongdae Inheonje, a memorial ceremony held since 1988. The festival takes place against the backdrop of cultural heritage sites imbued with the spirit of the general, such as Nakseongdae, where General Gang Gam-chan was born at the site where the fourth star of the Bukduchil-Fortress, Mungok-Fortress, fell; Inheon-dong, named after the general's posthumous title; and Seowon-dong, where the pavilion he frequently visited while traveling to and from Songdo is located. Various programs are conducted to continue his legacy in today's context. 'Tomorrow Gang Gam-chan' begins on the third week of October. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, the Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival is evolving into a sustainable, symbiotic festival that bridges generations and revitalizes the region, expanding its content as a Seoul representative Goryeo historical and cultural festival embracing K-culture.
