About the festival

The Wonju Yongsugol Poppy Festival, held in the Yongsugol area of Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, is a representative local festival that originated from the residents' love for flowers. It began in 2005 when a resident who returned to farming planted poppies in a field of about 300 pyeong, attracting more visitors than expected and garnering interest from the local community. Since 2007, the village corporation and residents have systematically participated, establishing it as a festival representing the region. Notably, this festival is the only one in the country organized by residents at the 'ri' level, giving it significant symbolic meaning. The 19th Wonju Yongsugol Poppy Festival in 2026 will feature a festival site of approximately 13,000 pyeong, showcasing poppies along with 43 other types of flowers that bloom around the same time, offering visitors beautiful natural scenery. Additionally, as a poppy Seuta-Village included in the 'Top 20 Seuta-Villages' selected by the public and recognized by experts among 1,200 villages nationwide, it enhances the region's status. This festival is an important event that widely promotes not only the beauty of poppies but also the values and culture of the local community.
