About the festival

The Gosan-ri site in Jeju is known as the earliest Neolithic site in Korea, where fiber pottery known as Gosan-ri pottery and stone tools made using the bifacial flaking method have been excavated. The artifacts and cultural layers identified at the Gosan-ri site are evaluated as important materials for understanding the formation and development of early Neolithic culture in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. Additionally, the area around Gosan-ri is home to various natural and cultural heritage sites, including the UNESCO Global Geopark Suwolbong, the Gosan-ri landmark, which is a cultural asset of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and the natural monument Chagwi-do. The Jeju Gosan-ri Prehistoric Festival is a local festival that operates various programs and community participation activities that allow visitors to experience the prehistoric culture and lifestyle based on the region's historical, cultural, and natural heritage. The festival aims to introduce the historical and cultural value of the Jeju Gosan-ri site and to enhance interest and understanding of the region's cultural heritage.
