About the festival
The civilization that blossomed on the volcanic island of Jeju, part of the Eurasian Plate, flowed not only from the sea but also from the northern mainland. Various elements scattered and converged on Jeju, mixing and transforming to create the ecology, geography, and way of life that define Jeju today. Now in its 10th year, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on the unique process of Jeju's interaction with northern civilizations, scattering (Heokkeuda), gathering (Modakchida), and transforming (Iyahong). To this end, the Biennale adopts the refrain 'Iyahong' from the Iyahong Taryeong, a native folk song that flowed from the mainland to Jeju, as its theme and core concept. Through Jeju, imbued with the principles of climate and sustenance, the Jeju Biennale aims to present the survival methods and aesthetics crafted by the interplay of objects, nature, human life, and divinity.
