About the festival

The 2026 Suwon Theater Festival is expected to provide an inspiring festival experience where everyday spaces transform into beautiful stages of art through experimental and diverse public space theater. In the lush month of May, a grand celebration of performing arts called "Party in the Forest" will be held, featuring street theater, circus performances, and more. The Suwon Theater Festival began in 1996 under the name "Suwon Fortress International Theater Festival" in the Hwaseong area of Suwon, focusing on theater and outdoor performances. In 2018, the festival moved its venue to the Gyeonggi Creative Economy Innovation Center, centering on public space theater. The Suwon Theater Festival aims to invigorate the monotonous daily lives of citizens through new artistic experiences and to utilize public spaces like parks as artistic stages, stimulating joyful artistic imagination about everyday spaces. Furthermore, the Suwon Theater Festival seeks to support excellent street art groups and discover new artists to promote the development of 'public space theater' in Korea, while also playing a role in cultural exchange between countries through international collaboration. In 2026, experimental and diverse public space theater performances are expected to provide new artistic experiences, including 16 recently produced domestic works and three pieces from the France Focus program, celebrating the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations. At the 2026 Suwon Theater Festival, citizens will be able to experience the essence of the festival, "stepping away from daily life to observe it," through new art that contains serious discussions about our lives.
