About the festival
*The food content of the Hagi Festival site is based on the previous year's (2025) festival details, and the 2026 festival details are currently being updated.* The Gwangju Chueok Festival is the largest representative festival of Gwangju, located in the best commercial area of Jeonnam Gwangju, 'Chungjang-ro' in Dong-gu. This festival holds special significance as the 'first domestic memory-themed festival' that encompasses generations and classes through the universal theme of 'memory.' It creates a space for memory production where everyone can share their precious memories and create new memories together, regardless of age or background. In particular, it is historically and culturally valuable as it unfolds around the key spaces of Geumnam-ro and the May 18 Democracy Square, which are significant in the history of global democracy, transcending a simple local festival. As a festival held in the sacred place of democratization, it symbolizes the citizens' will to overcome past pains and strive for a hopeful future. The Chungjang Festival has been recognized for its excellence and was first designated as an honorary cultural tourism festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024. It has been reselected as an honorary cultural tourism festival for 2026-2027, maintaining its honorary status for four consecutive years (2024-2027). Additionally, it won the 'Global Excellence Award' at the 2026 Korea Festival Content Awards, achieving the remarkable feat of the Gwangju Chueok Festival winning the award for ten consecutive years, further proving its status as a global excellence festival representing Korea. In the future, there are great aspirations to develop into an international festival that encompasses the culture and memories of all of Asia through cooperation with the Gukripasiamunhwa Center, while Gwangju plays a valuable role in enhancing its status as a cultural hub city in Asia and providing a space for communication and harmony through culture.
