Yeosu Tortoise Ship Festival, during the Imjin War, was a festival to honor the spirits of the soldiers and leaders of the Opo region, which was under the jurisdiction of the Jeonra Jwasu-Temple, including Suncheon Dohobu, Nakan-gun, Boseong-gun, Gwangyang-hyeon, and Heungyang-hyeon. The festival is held every year around May 4th to commemorate the first sortie of the fleet formed by General Isunsin, who was appointed as the 3rd rank Jeonra Jwasu-Temple in 1591, gathering the soldiers of the Opo region to fight against the invading Japanese. The Jeonra Jwasu-Temple Isunsin fleet, composed of local leaders, soldiers, and Mumyeongsu-gun, achieved remarkable naval tactics with 85 warships, never suffering a defeat against the Japanese. The Jeonra Jwasu-Temple was elevated in 1593 to the first Samdosuguntongje-Temple, overseeing the Chungcheong, Jeonra, and Gyeongsang naval forces. General Isunsin of the Jeonra Jwasu-Temple was appointed as the 2nd rank Samdosuguntongje-Temple, leading the Joseon navy and finally bringing an end to the seven-year war. Yeosu is a city with a clear historical basis where the Jeonra Jwasu-Temple was first established as the main base of the Samdosuguntongje-Temple and lasted for nine years. The area around Jinnamgwan in Yeosu is the old site of the Samdosuguntongje-Temple and Jeonra Jwasu-Temple. Chungmin Temple in Deokchung-dong is the first shrine in Joseon, established in 1601 by King Seonjo, who personally named it after the death of General Lee Chungmu. On the first day of the festival, a traditional ceremony to announce the opening of the Tortoise Ship Festival begins at Chungmin Temple, followed by the 'Tongjeonggilnori' performance at sunset, and various traditional cultural performances and exhibitions continue for four days at Isunsin Square and the surrounding area. The Yeosu Tortoise Ship Festival is a representative festival of Jeonnamgwangjutonghapteukbyeol-si, created by the citizens of Yeosu to convey the meaning of the achievements and spirit of the people and Mumyeongsu-gun who sacrificed their lives to protect the country, and it is a national cultural festival that boasts the best of our country.
