About the festival
According to legend, Samrang Fortress, surrounded by Jeondeung Temple, was built by the sons of Dangun to prevent invasions by outsiders. After moving to Ganghwado to escape the Mongol invasions during the Goryeo Dynasty, it became a site where the will to resist the Mongols was ignited for 120 days at the Samrang Fortress. It is also the place where the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty were kept for 250 years and the site of victory against the French army during the Byeongin Yangyo. Furthermore, it is a place where, during the late Joseon period, the righteous army fought against Japanese rule and won a battle for a week. For 5,000 years, it has continuously interacted with our history and is a site of national pride that embraces our history. To feel and widely promote the pride of our glorious history, the Samrang Fortress Historical and Cultural Festival is held every year starting from the first Saturday of October, marking its 26th year this year.
