About the festival

The grand ritual and dance, recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage, is held in the Jongmyo Jeongjeon, a place steeped in five hundred years of history. This ceremony honors the spirits of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. Restored in 1969, it has continued to this day, recognized for its cultural value as a comprehensive ritual combining royal ceremonies, dance, and music, and was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity representative list in 2001. Since 2006, it has been conducted as an international event inviting dignitaries from home and abroad, attracting global attention. Every year on the first Sunday of May, it offers a special opportunity to witness the high-class royal ceremonies, music, and dance of the Joseon royal family.
