About the festival
Takma – Iron sharpens iron, potatoes peel potatoes. Iron sharpens iron, Potatoes sharpen potatoes. The proverb 'Iron shines with iron' suggests that a person must rub against another to shed their old self, likening it to the sharpening of iron. In temples, this is referred to as 'Takma Doban.' Just as potatoes are placed in a large basin with water and rubbed against each other to peel their skins, Buddhists practice Takma through their companions. The Pohang sea extends deep inland, creating a landscape that is quite different from other places. The rubbing of Pohang people also conveys a richness of emotion that is distinct from elsewhere. "What most captivates people is other people." (William H. White) Capturing the identity of Pohang, a city living with iron, dreaming of the renewal of metal and the completion of ironware, the theme of the 2026 Pohang Steel Art Festival is ""Tagma", ""Iron sharpens iron, Potatoes sharpen potatoes."" Tagma aims to skillfully blend the P and H of Pohang instead of jade and stone, revealing the brilliant essence of life in Pohang to the world.
