Dobong Hangul Festival

About the festival

Hangul is a script that understands the hearts of people and connects their thoughts and intentions. Hangul conveyed the hearts of the people who found it difficult to express their meanings and was also a hope that firmly preserved the spirit of our nation even in the dark history. Dobong-gu in Seoul is a place where historical figures who created, protected, and enjoyed Hangul, including Princess Jeongui, the daughter of King Sejong, and figures like Jeon Hyung-pil and Jeong In-bo, who preserved our language and script during the Japanese colonial period, as well as poet Kim Soo-young, who sang of freedom in Hangul, have left their mark. The year 2026 marks the 580th anniversary of the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of 'Hangul Day' and the creation of 'Hunmaengjeongeum' for the visually impaired, making it a significant year. In this regard, the Dobong Cultural Center will hold the 15th Dobong Hangul Festival 'Eodumeul Ttulhgo, Maeumeul Itda' to reflect on the intentions of those who have protected Hangul amidst the darkness of the times and the heart towards people contained in Hangul. The festival aims to connect the history of creating, protecting, and enjoying Hangul with the figures and cultural resources of Dobong, providing a space for exhibitions, performances, and experiences to share with today's society.
