About the festival
The '132nd Anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Ceremony', hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation, will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026, at 11 AM in the Grand Auditorium of the National Museum of Korea under the slogan 'Donghak Peasant Revolution, Becoming Today's Light'. The Donghak Peasant Revolution was a popular resistance movement that arose in 1894 against a corrupt feudal society and to prevent foreign invasion. To honor the noble spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and widely promote its historical value, May 11, the date of the first victory at Hwangtohyeon, was designated as a national memorial day in 2019 and is celebrated annually with a national ceremony. This commemoration aims to honor the participants of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, inherit and develop the spirit of patriotism and love for one's country, contribute to the restoration of honor for participants and their families, and spread its significance to the entire nation.
