About the festival
The 'Myo-hyeon Ceremony' is a ritual in which the queen or crown princess, after completing their marriage during the Joseon Dynasty, pays respects at Jongmyo Shrine where the spirit tablets of past kings and queens are enshrined. This ceremony is unique as it is the only state ritual during the Joseon Dynasty in which women participated at Jongmyo, providing a special historical insight into the lives and status of royal women. In 2026, the 'Jongmyo Myo-hyeon Ceremony' will consist of a creative musical titled 'Myo-hyeon, Records of the Queen' based on the Myo-hyeon Ceremony and an event for experiencing royal attire called 'Taking Photos as Crown Prince and Crown Princess.' The creative musical 'Myo-hyeon, Records of the Queen' is a reimagining of the Myo-hyeon Ceremony of Queen Inwon, the third queen consort of King Sukjong, in 1703 (the 29th year of Sukjong's reign). It contains a story of conflict between state etiquette and personal emotions, as well as a touching narrative about Kim Jushin, who could no longer treat his daughter as he used to after she ascended to the position of queen.
