About the festival

The Seonnong Daegye is a representative traditional cultural festival of Dongdaemun District that modernly reenacts the traditional rite called 'Seonnongje', which was held to pray for a good harvest in the year and to offer sacrifices to the agricultural deities, Seonnong and Hujik. During the Joseon Dynasty, the king personally prayed for a good harvest and conducted the ritual, overseeing the people's livelihoods through a farming ceremony with the citizens, inheriting the historical value of this national rite. The main event takes place at Seonnongdan located in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun District, featuring traditional ritual ceremonies and a reenactment of the royal procession as major highlights. In particular, after the ritual, to commemorate the origin of Seolleongtang, which was said to have been granted by the king to the people, a tasting event is held where a large cauldron of soup is prepared and shared. Now in its 47th year, this event has established itself as a cultural venue for communication between local residents and tourists.
