About the festival
*The festival information below is for 2026. Information for the 2027 festival is being updated.* The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, held in Hwacheon, Gangwon State, is a unique winter festival named one of the “7 Wonders of Winter” by CNN in 2011. The festival takes place every January, when the famously clear Hwacheon Stream freezes solid. Visitors can catch sancheoneo, known as the queen of the valley, through activities such as ice fishing and catching them with their bare hands. You can enjoy the thrill of ice fishing for sancheoneo and eat your catch fresh as sashimi or grilled. In addition to fishing, a variety of winter activities—including ice sledding, snow sledding, and bobsledding—are offered, attracting more than one million visitors each year.
