About the festival
*The food content for the Hagi Festival is based on the previous year's (2025) festival, and the food content for the 2026 festival is currently being updated.* The lanterns originated from the Battle of Jinju Fortress, one of the three great battles of the Imjin War, where they were used as a military signal to communicate with the righteous army outside the fortress and as a means of communication between families. The citizens of Jinju have inherited this tradition and have been operating the 'Lantern Festival' as a program of the 'Gaecheon Arts Festival', the first local comprehensive arts festival in our country, which has been held since 1949. Since 2000, it has been independently held as the 'Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival'. The lanterns have transformed into a festival that embodies the citizens' wishes for peace, love, happiness, and the fulfillment of wishes, and today it has grown into a global festival that shares the value of peace with people around the world. Every autumn, in 'Jinju, the City of Light and Peace', the spectacle of lanterns spread across the Namgang River and the Jinju Fortress area reminds us of the beautiful scenery and the historical significance contained within it.
