About the festival
The lanterns originated from the military signals exchanged between the righteous army outside Jinju Fortress during the Battle of Jinju, one of the three great victories of the Imjin War, as well as a means of communication to convey greetings among families by floating lanterns on the Namgang River. The citizens of Jinju have inherited this tradition and have been operating the 'Lantern Festival' as a program of the 'Gaecheon Arts Festival', the first local comprehensive arts festival in our country, which has been held since 1949. Since 2000, it has been independently held as the 'Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival'. The lanterns have transformed into a festival wishing for peace among citizens and for love, happiness, and the fulfillment of wishes, growing into a global festival that shares the value of peace with people around the world. Every autumn, in 'Jinju, the City of Light and Peace', the spectacular display of lanterns along the Namgang River and around Jinju Fortress reminds us of the beautiful scenery and the historical significance contained within.
