About the festival
Since ancient times, the Suyeong region has been rich in fishery resources, leading to the development of the fishing industry. After the establishment of Gyeongsangjwasuyeong during the Joseon Dynasty, the concentration of naval forces led to issues with food supply. Consequently, the naval commander allowed off-duty naval forces to participate in fishing with local fishermen. The fishermen provided fishing boats, while the naval forces contributed navigation skills and labor, further advancing the local fishing industry. As the catch increased, the supply of provisions to the naval forces also became more efficient. In the 11th year of King Hyeonjong's reign (1670), a fishery office was established within the fortress to promote and encourage fishing, providing guidance on fishing techniques. The "Jwasuyeong Eobangnori," which re-enacts the fishing process of that time in a playful manner, is currently designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage and is preserved and passed down. The Gwangalli Eobang Festival uses the name "Eobang" to signify the continuation of this tradition and is a representative festival of Busan, themed around the folk culture of Gyeongsangjwasuyeong and traditional fishing villages.
