About the festival
Yangdong Back to the Market Hongtak Festa is a festival held to promote and revitalize traditional markets by combining skate, a signature specialty of Gwangju’s Yangdong Market, with takju, a traditional Korean rice wine from the Gwangju area. Seven merchants’ associations—including those of Yangdong Market, Su Market, Yangdong Covered Market, Gyeongyeolro Market, Geoneomul Market, and Dalkjeongil Market—take part together to create synergies through market integration and attract visitors. During the festival, a variety of hongtak food stalls operate, along with a 1,000-won makgeolli booth where visitors can sample leading local varieties, including Mudeungsan Makgeolli and Via Makgeolli, for 1,000 won per glass. The program also includes a receipt cashback event offering Onnuri gift certificates and skate-tasting coupons, as well as diverse cultural performances and special programs such as an opening ceremony performance, a lively singing and dance contest, a hongtak feast competition with a gourmet show by master chef Anyu Seong, and an EDM DJ party. This signature traditional market festival in Gwangju offers a chance to enjoy Yangdong Market’s distinctive food culture, which connects tradition and generations.
