About the festival
In the late 1990s, Bonghwa-gun began to recognize the high-quality Songi mushrooms that grow naturally in its pristine nature and deep forests as a future resource for the region. In particular, the rare resource known as 'Bonghwa Songi', which only grows in clean forest areas above 600m in elevation, has attracted the attention of food enthusiasts both domestically and internationally due to its unique aroma and texture that differentiate it from Songi mushrooms from other regions. Bonghwa-gun planned a 'nature and gourmet fusion festival' that goes beyond simple promotion of local specialties, allowing residents and tourists to come together, and it was in this context that the 'Bonghwa Songi Festival' took its first steps. Launched in 1997, the Bonghwa Songi Festival has been held throughout Bonghwa-gun, focusing on experiences of mushroom picking, tasting events for Songi dishes, and sales exhibitions of local specialties, and with active participation from the local community, the excellence of Songi has become widely recognized, gradually establishing the Bonghwa Songi Festival as a representative autumn gourmet festival of South Korea. In particular, the Songi Festival has grown into a comprehensive festival that conveys the values of nature conservation and coexistence, going beyond a simple consumer event, and is linked with traditional performances, experiences related to local agricultural products, and tourism circulation programs, integrating culture, tourism, and economy.
